How to say that you don't like something in English?


When I first have a class with a student I want to get to know them better. So, I ask them what are their likes and dislikes. Usually, they answer "I like this and I don't like...that."


Answering a question with " I don't like ..." is perfectly fine. However, to be honest, American native English speakers don't say "I don't like..." all of the time. In this article, I will teach you 4 different ways to say " I don't like...something", to sound more like an American native English speaker.


4 Examples of How to Say You Don't Like Something in English


Use any of these phrases to say you don't like something and you'll sound like an American native speaker.


1. Not my cup of tea

It can be used for example when someone asks you a question like:


Do you like to eat sushi?

You can answer:

Sushi is not my cup of tea

(Which means you don't like to eat sushi)




2. I'm not a fan of that

How do we use it? For example, if someone says something like:

I like to drink tea with milk.

But, If you don't like to drink milk with your milk, you can say:

I'm not a fan of drinking tea with milk.





3. I am not very fond of

Examples:

I'm not very fond of eating chocolate.

I'm not very fond of going out to clubs anymore.




4. I am not too keen on

Example:

I´m not too keen on watching horror movies.

I'm not too keen on going to bed late.



Now you can choose any of these phrases when you want to say you don't like something and sound like an American native English speaker.
